Counselling for Students

Coping with student life

Student life can be tricky to navigate

understand that you want to gain as much from your time at university as possible, both academically and socially. Counselling support can help you achieve this at times when difficulties of an emotional or psychological nature interfere with your life both within and outside the University. This might involve practical advice, support or wellbeing/ counselling.  Many students access my mental health support or counselling as well as a wide range of self-help materials.

It is impossible to say exactly what your personal university experience will be like – there are too many variables, but what is true is that there are some things that virtually all students will come to experience or realise at some point during their university education:

Many students find lectures intimidating, worry about managing money, feel isolated, find social situations awkward etc.

You are not on your own

I have worked with students with symptoms or diagnosis of ADHD and/or ASD for many years. I understand the difficulties that that are often faced, particularly when negotiating the independence and complexities of student life.

We all have mental health, our mental health, like physical health, does not always stay the same and is often on a spectrum. I recognise that everyone is different.

Mental wellbeing doesn't have one set meaning. We might use it to talk about how we feel, how well we're coping with daily life or what feels possible at the moment. The space and time is yours. Stress and Anxiety: Understanding stress and anxiety, and how to reduce stressors can positively impact on mental health. Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them which are not matched by their ability to cope. Pressure can be positive and motivating in the short term, helping to achieve success. Prolonged stress, however, can leave you physically and mentally unwell.

Sessions can be fortnightly, monthly, weekly or varied.  I aim to be as flexible as possible with appointments and times. I fully understand that lecture times change, that deadlines loom quicker than expected, field trips, visits home, internships etc...

Some students have sessions for a term, a year or for the duration of their course, the choice is yours.
